President Letter

It’s November, 2017 and this is my last message of the year. As I look back, I see so much devastation from fires in Orange County and all over the state. Many lives lost and many firefighters injured and some died. I was looking thru the USFA/ FEMA LODD report for 2017 and was shocked to see how many California Firefighters and Firefighters throughout the US had died YTD 2017.  Please be safe out on wildland fires, structure fires, rescues, traffic accidents, and responding to incidents.

Orange County Fire Services Association Board attended the 9/11 Ceremony at the Fire House Church in Brea. Pastor Fernando and his church did a great tribute to 9/11 and honored local firefighters and police officers. You can see more about the event in this magazine. The Annual Orange County Fire Service Firefighter Memorial had to be rescheduled this year due to the Canyon 2 Fire, to December 4 th at the Firefighter Monument in Santa Ana. Please plan on attending this event.

This year Orange County Fire Services Association is doing a Christmas “Shop with a Firefighter” program that will be held on December 9 th . We will be taking children from the Orangewood Home shopping for gifts and personal items for their wants and needs. This magazine highlights the City of Orange Fire Department. I would like to thank Chief Jack Thomas and Assist Fire Marshal Ian MacDonald for making this article available. Also, thanks the other contributors to the Orange County Firefighter Magazine. To Pastor Fernando for his pictures and articles, Randy Babbitt for the training article, and Don Croucher for California Fire Museum Article.

Big John Fire Prevention Education Program had a productive 2017. Big John 2 is already receiving school requests for 2018 as well as requests for other events and we are looking forward to the possibility of a newer rig to continue the popular program that started back in 1992 with our first Big John.

We continue updates to our Facebook Page under Orange County Fire Services Association and we continue working on enhancements to that page and our website.

Again, we are looking for new board members or help for association activities. If you’re interested contact me at We continue to thank Fountain Valley, Huntington Beach, and Fullerton Firefighters Associations for their ongoing support, and all the other individual members for your support.
